Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity. – Martin Luther King, Jr.
There are sincerely ignorant people in our society, as well as people who are conscientiously stupid. I think they are in the minority, but unfortunately they yell the loudest, and the media gives them the most attention. What if we just ignored them? What if we stopped making their stories viral on the internet? What if we dropped the cause of trying to educate the sincerely ignorant, and rewarded critical thinking? What if we only supported the people who are trying the make positive changes in our world? What if we only gave attention to the people who will reach across the aisle and say, “yes, we are different, but our diversity makes us strong.”?
Is it possible that constantly focusing on people’s crappy behavior is giving it a legitimate place in our society? Are we giving the bigots, and people who wish us harm more power? Is the constant finger wagging just wasted time and energy? I believe the answer to these questions is yes!
I want to focus on the good, and ignore the ignorance. Build up and applaud the people who are positive influences in my life and in the lives of others. Support critical thinking, and understand that not everything I read is the truth. Understand that the bad behavior of a few isn’t indicative of the behavior of an entire group. See that it’s OK that you don’t believe in what I believe in, and even though our realities are different, they are both legitimate.
I believe the more diverse our lives are, and the more we educate ourselves, the fuller we will live. The closed-minded can live out their lives they way they choose, for I know, they are the ones truly missing out.
