When I was in college, Kate Mulgrew came to our school and spoke to us about what it takes to make it in the entertainment business. To this day I can’t remember much of what she said, as one specific thing she said stood out to me and made me mad as hell, preventing me from hearing anything else she had to say. In so many words she told us aspiring female actresses that if we wanted to make it in the business, we needed to stop eating and be skinny.
I knew there was truth in what she was saying, but I disliked her for being so nonchalant about it.
Now that Kate Mulgrew is playing Red on Orange Is The New Black, I gloated a bit when I saw she had gained a little bit of weight over the past 10 years. But after I got off my high horse, I realized that she was on a hit series, surrounded by women of all shapes and sizes. How could this be?! Is it progress, or a one-off?
I love OITNB as a series, and what it is doing for actresses of all types. Thanks Netflix for doing it right, and defying the stereotype seeded in my brain years ago.
Now the question is: Will the trend continue?
