When we lived in the Steinway area in Astoria, we had an upstairs neighbor who I will refer to as Mr. S.
Mr. S was in his late 50’s, he was single, and it seemed as he was a bit of a hoarder. I had never been into his apartment, which was above ours, but when you looked up the stairwell, the hallway remained brimming with piles and piles of old newspapers. Andy got to know him better than I did, and found out he was a peak oil guy.
Some peak oil people are way into investing in gold, and Mr. S would always recommend that we invest similarly. We never took his suggestion, as we didn’t have the money to invest, but gold has proved to be a fantastic investment.
Every once in a while, we would be in the bedroom, and Mr. S would be upstairs dragging heavy things across his floor for hours on end. I didn’t think too much about it, until I remembered his obsession with investing in gold. I concluded he was dragging his stacks of gold around the apartment to make room for more. Frequently, after the noise started, one of us would say to the other, “There goes Mr. S, dragging his gold around again.”
Since then, I have made a conscious effort to pay attention to the news for a story about a man in Astoria getting robbed of millions of dollars worth of gold, but it seems for now, it hasn’t happened.
Wherever Mr. S is, I hope he is still dragging his gold around, and investing wisely.
