45 Macaroni and Cheese Pancakes

I have never officially met Kenny Shopsin, but he has cooked me breakfast several times.

One of the best meals I have had in NYC is Shopsin’s macaroni and cheese pancakes. Pancake batter mixed with macaroni, topped with cheddar cheese, crisped to perfection on the grill, smothered with butter and real maple syrup. It’s a savory/sweet dream.

The Shopsin family is old school New York, and in their restaurant, the customer is not always right. They will not seat parties over 4, and if you have your cellphone out, they will kick you out of the restaurant. Seriously. The staff (which is mainly family members) curse loudly as they work. If you take to long looking at the insane menu, they get agitated.

Aside from all that, it’s an awesome place to eat. If you decide to check it out, take a look at the menu before you arrive. In addition, if you want to check it out on the weekend, be ready for a long wait.

Shopsin’s is located in the Essex Street Market, in the LES. Kenny has a cookbook, which I own and love. Someone even made a documentary about the place called, I Like Killing Flies.

If you live in NYC, or only come to visit, you need to experience Shopsin’s. I have introduced several people to Shopsin’s over the years, including my parents, and not one of my guests had a bad experience. Although, if it sounds a little overwhelming, ring me up! I would be more than happy to take you.
