During the 2008 trial in Queens, we had a Friday off from the trial as the judge wanted to go golfing. So instead of wrapping up the trial that week, we had to wait until the following Monday.
It’s good to be the king!
Thanks for reading, and enjoy your weekend!!
When I was on jury duty in Brooklyn, the case was slightly complicated. The defendant was accused of breaking into an apartment in Crown Heights, strangling a woman whom he knew from church in Park Slope, attempting to rape her, slashing her face and hand with a knife before she escaped from her apartment naked via the window, taking shelter in a nearby bodega.
After a day at Jury Duty in 2012 I walked outside and saw the Who’s Your Daddy Truck outside of the Kings County Family Court. I thought it was a joke at first, but found out that it’s run by Health Street and is quite legit. I applaud what these folks do, and I love that they have a sense of humor about it.
When I sat on a jury in Queens in 2008, it was a case dealing with a man charged with unlawful possession of a gun. The case itself wasn’t very complex, but the female DA who was against the defendant, thought she was on Law and Order.
During voir dire in Kings County Court in 2012, I saw plenty of interesting ways to get out of jury duty, but this was the best.
In order to be a juror in New York State you must be able to understand and communicate in the English language.
I served on a jury in Queens in 2007, and received another summons when I moved to Brooklyn in 2012. I technically could have gotten out of it because it had not been 6 years since my prior service, but I loved it so much the first time, I went in again.
